Solutions for electrical components and infrastructure

Technology is built into our cities, homes, offices and vehicles, creating a new generation of smart devices. The fierce pace of development and competition in the electronics markets drives a constant demand for thinner, lighter, more energy-efficient components. This, coupled with the trend of inter-connectivity of all devices in higher performing and smaller more compact spaces, has created tremendous opportunity for engineering thermoplastics (ETP).

To meet these challenges, manufacturers need to make products that are cost-effective to produce. SABIC’s ETP resin solutions can also help make products more durable, reliable, lighter and visually unique. They have contributed to the development of many breakthrough electronic device designs and are the foundation for the next generation of devices to come.

SABIC’s flame retardant (FR) ETP resins have enhanced levels of mechanical, optical, electrical and thermal properties. They comply with Underwriter Laboratory testing protocols and offer a wide variety of product options.

Our comprehensive and growing portfolio and our expertise demonstrate a deep understanding of customer needs. We deliver tailored materials to meet their requirements, whilst meeting consumers’ expectations for style, ease of use and sustainability.

ELECTRICAL VEHICLE INFRASTRUCTURE

Electric vehicles (EVs) have come to the forefront as an option for more mainstream transportation due to climate change’s rapid rise up in the political agenda.

Although there are still challenges - including battery prices and efficiency, lack of charging infrastructure, and a delay in common legislations - the plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) market has seen high growth in the last few years and is expected to be more solid in the long term.

VALOX FR resins are used in EV connectors and internal electrical components. The VALOX family of thermoplastic polyester resins are semi-crystalline materials based on polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) and/or polyethylene terephthalate (PET) polymers. They combine heat and chemical resistance, as well as outstanding electrical properties with exceptionally good processability and surface appearance. Flame retardant grades offer a UL94 5VA rating and a glow wire test (GWT) pass at 960 °C.

ENERGY MANAGEMENT - SMART METERS

Due to our ever increasing need for energy, it is crucial that we effectively and efficiently manage this valuable resource. Smart electrical meters are a critical component as they provide real time feedback to the system.

LEXAN FR and CYCOLOY FR resins are used in smart meter structural parts and housing.

With its broad portfolio of flame retardant unfilled and glass reinforced grades, LEXAN FR (PC) resin is found in a wide a range of electrical applications due to the key properties such as ECO flame retardant systems, dimensional stability, impact and heat resistance - with an RTI (Relative Temperature Index) of 125°C.

CYCOLOY FR (PC/ABS) resins are amorphous thermoplastic blends that combine ease of processing with low temperature ductility. CYCOLOY resin blends can meet specific property requirements, to help balance performance, cost and processability, providing an excellent design solution when both appearance and durability are important. The flame resistant resins portfolio is a series of amorphous PC/ABS blends suitable for injection molding, extrusion and thermoforming applications.
