Europur extends CertiPUR programme to recycled polyurethane foams

Europur launched CertiPUR for Bonded Foam, a new module extending the CertiPUR programme to mechanically recycled flexible polyurethane foam. It is the first certification scheme dedicated specifically to the health and safety properties of rebonded foam used in mattresses, upholstered furniture and other comfort applications.

Rebonded foam, produced from post-industrial or post-consumer PUR foam, is gaining importance as the industry advances towards greater circularity. Until now, no harmonised method existed to ensure that such materials consistently meet stringent chemical and emissions requirements. The new CertiPUR module addresses this need by providing a third-party verified, science-based framework to verify that bonded foam products are safe for consumers.

As with the main CertiPUR scheme, the bonded foam module specifies substances that may not be used in the production of polyurethane foams and sets stringent maximum limits for some components. Certification relies on independent, third-party laboratory testing. Post-industrial bonded foams require annual testing, while post-consumer bonded foams are tested twice per year to ensure ongoing compliance.

The new module is open to producers of rebonded polyurethane foam worldwide. With this new module, CertiPUR now covers three categories of flexible polyurethane foam: slabstock foam for furniture and bedding applications, moulded foam for furniture and bedding applications, and rebonded foam.
