More plastic recycling in Europe, with Norway leading the field

Plastic and environment - Wednesday, 16 December 2015

There is good news on plastic recycling in Europe. In 2014, 7.7 million tons of plastic waste was collected (compared with 6.6 million in 2012), of which 69.2% was sent for recycling or re-used to generate energy. This, in short, is what emerged from the annual report published by PlasticsEurope and Epro (the European Association for the recovery and recycling of plastics).

Post-consumer plastic material produced in the EU, Norway and Switzerland reached the 25.8 million ton mark (the 2013 total was 25.2 million tons). In the ranking of Europe’s most virtuous countries, first place goes to Norway, which recorded a recycling rate of 40%,  followed by Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Spain, the Czech Republic, Holland, Germany, Ireland, Portugal and Estonia, each with around 30%, while Malta brings up rear with 14%.
